Siquijor TravelSeries : Enchanted Old Balete Tree

The centuries-old enchanted balete tree is one of the famous tourist destinations in the island.  The tree believed to be about 400+ hundred years old. The way its roots and branches covered the main tree gives off an eerie feeling to the visitors.

The tree stood as high as about 20 meters which provides a cool shade to tourists. Balete trees are known to hold  mysteries like homes of the mystical  tikbalang (horse demon) or huge bearded-smoking kapre which resides on huge and old trees. This 400-year old tree is known to be the biggest and oldest  in Siquijor.

A spring from the base of the tree flows its way to the man-made mini-pool where locals made it as a fish-spa for P5 pesos per head. It's exciting to see small fishes swimming as fast as they could once you dip your tiring feet to the pool. They nibble excitedly at your feet, which of course, tickles you.  In usual spas, this activity costs you about P150 to P200 per hour, but in Siquijor a P5 fish-spa is such a must-try.

A souvenir shop is located near the fish-spa.  Siquijor is known for herbal medicines and oils; they even held  healing festivals where herbalists and healers from Visayas and Mindanao come together to participate healing and preparations of a variety of concoctions from a variety of herbs, roots, insects and others. They even sell love potions!
